FAQ UofG First-Year Science

Updated September 2022

Q: Where are my PHYS 1080 Lectures?

A: One of ROZH 104, ROZH 101, or MACN 105 depending on your section.

I get asked a lot of the same questions, so here are the answers to some of the most common ones relating to first-year science at the University of Guelph:

Q: Where are my PHYS 1300 Lectures?

A: One of MACN 105, MACN 113, or ROZH 104 depending on your section. ROZH is code for Rozanski Hall, and MACN is code for MacNaughton. See above for the location of these buildings.

Rozanski Hall

MACN is code for MacNaughton (not to be confused with Mackinnon). It’s the building with the bookstore, and the entrance faces the main courtyard with the canon.

ROZH is code for Rozanski hall. It’s one of the biggest lecture halls on campus, you can’t miss it.

Q: Where is the quiz room for PHYS 1300 and PHYS 1080?

A: Both courses require you to write in-person quizzes in a specific room in the Summerlee Science Complex (SSC 1101). The entrance is a bit tricky to find because you can’t (easily) get to it directly from inside SSC. Instead, you have to enter from the outside near MacNaughton. Here’s a video guide to getting there:

Q: Do I really need my textbook for PHYS 1080?

A: While I can’t say it’s 100% necessary, I highly recommend that you get a copy of the textbook for this course. It’s called “PHYSICS FOR THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES”, 5th edition, by Williams M.L. et al. Many of the practice problems that you’ll be assigned through the study guide will be in this book, and frankly it’s a great resource with lots of thorough explanations and example problems. It’s also used for the follow-up to this course that most of you will be taking next semester (PHYS 1070), so you’ll get plenty of use out of it. You can buy it new from the University Bookstore, but you should be able to find a used copy for $40-$60 if you’re looking to save some money.

Q: Where are my CHEM 1040 Lectures?

A: One of WMEM 103, ROZH 101, or ROZH 104 depending on your section. ROZH is code for Rozanski Hall, and WMEM is code for War Memorial. See above for the location of Rozanski Hall.

War Memorial Hall

Q: Do I really need my textbook for PHYS 1300?

A: I highly recommend getting a copy of the textbook for this course. It’s called “PHYSICS: AN ALGEBRA-BASED APPROACH”, 2nd Edition, by O’Meara et al. The University Bookstore sells new copies of the book that include an access code to a series of (optional) interactive online homework assignments worth a total 5% of your final grade. The book is also useable for the follow-up to this course that most of you will be taking next semester (PHYS 1080). If you’re looking to save money you should be able to find a used copy of the book for $40-$60, just be aware that in doing-so you’d be unable to complete the optional homework assignments that come with the ebook.
